Melody and Rio’s Journey:

“I Think You’ll Love Finland. I Already Do!”

Nervous, but excited and happy—that’s how Rio and Melody felt right after landing at Helsinki Airport. These two healthcare professionals were amazed to finally be in Finland and proud that they made it. But how was their Silk Road journey? And why did they choose Finland? Here’s a story on their journey to Finnish healthcare:

Working Abroad Before

Melody and Rio, now employed by the city of Helsinki, both have impressive backgrounds in healthcare. They are originally from the Philippines, but Melody had been working in Hong Kong while Rio was based in Singapore.

Melody started as a midwife, caring for pregnant mothers and newborns, while Rio worked as an assistant midwife, offering similar support. Both women later expanded their roles to elderly care—Melody worked part-time as a caregiver for seniors, helping with medications, bathing, and daily activities, while Rio spent five years caring for elderly patients, including those with Alzheimer’s disease.

Later on, Melody moved to Hong Kong to work as a domestic helper, handling household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and childcare while living with her employers. Around the same time, Rio moved to Singapore and worked as a personal caregiver for patients with complex medical conditions, including one with a spinal injury. She provided round-the-clock care, managing everything from mobility assistance to emotional support during difficult times. Their experiences in healthcare, elderly care, and household management gave them the skills to smoothly transition into their roles in Finland.

Seeking a Better Life

For Melody, moving to Europe had long been a dream. Initially, she didn’t consider Finland as an option, simply because she wasn’t aware it offered employment opportunities for foreign workers. Fortunately, Melody came across Silk Road’s ads on Facebook, attended an online orientation, and was intrigued by what she heard. Afterward, with the help of Google, Melody found out about Finland’s beautiful landscapes, aurora borealis, and the people, who were described as happy and warm. That’s something she wanted to experience.

Rio’s decision to move to Finland was motivated by the future of her children. In Singapore, bringing family members wasn’t possible, even if one had worked there for many years. That’s why Rio had to find another country where she could have her kids with her. Her children, aged 17, 15, and 12, had been separated from her during the pandemic while she worked in a hospital. Then, she moved to Singapore for work, further delaying their reunion.

Rio’s plan is to bring her children to Finland once she has settled. Although she has no family or friends in Finland, Rio believed that the opportunity Silk Road presented was worth taking. Luckily, she and Melody are now sharing an apartment, and Melody already has a few friends in Finland. One of them even came to pick her up from the airport!

“My friends have told me that the work here is good, the salary is fair, and the environment is nice. Of course, adjusting is not going to be easy, but it’s an opportunity to grow, develop our skills, and learn more.”

– Melody

The Silk Road Journey

Rio found her journey to Finland smooth, good, and well-supported. She got help and guidance whenever needed.

“Even in the very first orientation, all my questions were answered!”

– Rio

For Melody, the language training was smooth, though balancing studies with work was challenging at times. Whenever she needed adjustments to her schedule, she felt supported by the instructors. Both Melody and Rio successfully passed the required language tests, though they admit the Finnish language remains challenging. Still, they remain positive and committed to learning.

“With more practice, we’ll get there.”

– Rio

Finally in Finland

Now all the work has paid off, and Rio and Melody are finally in Finland. The country feels different from the places they’ve lived before—it’s quieter and less crowded. Rio is especially impressed by how well-preserved Finland’s nature is and is eager to explore more of the country. Melody, meanwhile, is looking forward to experiencing snow and seeing the Northern Lights for the first time.

“I like the nature and the environment here! It’s so peaceful.”

– Melody

Rio and Melody are deeply grateful for the opportunity to come to Finland. “Thank you to Silk Road—you’ve played a big role in making our dreams come true. From the very beginning to our arrival here, we appreciate all the passion and support,” they said. They also encourage others to follow their dreams. While the journey may be tough, both Rio and Melody agree that arriving in Finland makes all the sacrifices and hard work worth it.

“I think you’ll love Finland. I already do!”
